Course Length: 2 years.

Aims

The aim of this course is to prepare students to succeed in management positions that leverage computing technology to operate and expand business endeavors. The course will provide educational opportunities to information professionals for the 21st century, as the world moves from an economy of stand-alone companies to interdependent enterprises connected by the products of a global information infrastructure. The needs of existing IT managers, programmers, developers, network engineers, and other IT workers who aspire to move upward into technical management positions will be catered to with the emphasis on exploiting information technologies for productivity and competitiveness.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, graduates will possess:

§  An informed and reflexive perspective on management;

§  Certification as a IT security industry certification from organisations such as the EC-Council, the GIAC and the ISC²;

§  Knowledge of, and the ability to apply, a range of key management related principles and practices (principally those associated with: general management; change management; strategic management; Human Resource Management; Finance; and Marketing);

§  Advanced skills in the development of computer systems or the design, implementation and management of networks;

§  Higher order system administration knowledge and skills;

§  At least one high level industry certification;

§  Problem-solving skills and methodologies when troubleshooting and documenting complex computing problems;

§  The ability to analyse complex client business and technical requirements and select appropriate solutions, and

§  Skills in the development of leading edge solutions that meets customer business objectives for functionality and performance.

Industry Certifications

This Masters incorporates the following industry certifications as core or elective subjects:

§  The Security Essentials Certification (GSEC) from the GIAC organisation and SANS Institute;

§  The Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) from the GIAC organisation and SANS Institute;

§  The Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) cert from the EC Council;

§  The Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) from the The International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners

§  The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP®) industry certification exam from the International;

§  Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)²);

§  The Certified Forensics Analyst (GCFA) industry certification from the GIAC organisation and SANS Institute, and

§  The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) industry certification from the EC-Council.

Course Structure

The course consists of 12 subjects with a total value of 96 points. For students that do not qualify for any credit, the recommended duration to complete the Masters is 2 years. There are 3 trimesters per year and we recommend a commitment of 2 subjects per trimester.

Graduate Certificate in Management (Information Technology)

The Master of Management (Information Technology) is an articulated course that incorporates the Graduate Certificate in Management (Information Technology).  The certificate can be stand alone or, upon successful completion, students may proceed (with full credit) into the Master of Management (Information Technology).  To graduate with the Graduate Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete 4 subjects, which include two industry certification subjects.

Important Note regarding Digital Forensic Certification Subjects

The Digital Forensic Industry Certification Subjects are only available for credit and are not available for study via Distance education with Charles Sturt University.  Credit for Digital Forensics certification subjects will be awarded on proof that the students have passed the relevant industry certification exams from GIAC, the EC Council or (ISC)2 .

IT Masters recommends that students prepare for the industry certification exams by attending courses at training providers recommended by these organisations, including Excom Education.

Credit

Academic credit is available to students who can provide proof that they have passed relevant industry examinations.

NOTE: The actual level of credit awarded will be confirmed upon acceptance into the Degree.
